The Waterfall

Today may be the last
Day of my life
Changing the rest
And you, you are the light
That will stand out
Just want to fight
And win without a doubt

I want to hide
Under the Waterfall
No one in sight
Under the Waterfall
No one can hear my call
Under the Waterfall

War must come to an end
Before many lives
Will lose what they meant
A man of flesh & blood
Who turns his tears
Into a flood
Of pain, facing his fears

I want to hide
Under the Waterfall
No one in sight
Under the Waterfall
No one can hear my call
Under the Waterfall

The world keeps spinning 'round
And hides behind a smile
Waterfall

I want to hide
Under the Waterfall
No one in sight
Under the Waterfall
No one can hear my call
Under the Waterfall
Under the Waterfall
Under the Waterfall

The Waterfall took quite some time to write. Written on acoustic guitar. Mark had the riff, the melody for the choruses and the title. After hearing this, we decided this would make a great opening track. And given the "wall of sound"-arrangement we had in mind, the lyrics also needed to be larger than life. Once the "hide under the Waterfall" line was there, the rest of the lyrics came to us quite fast. It's a perfect hiding place, 'cause no-one will ever find you, but it's also not a very easy or peaceful place: it's a struggle. The first verse is written in the first person and talks about inner struggle and the longing for peace. Second verse talks about global struggle. There's a vague reference to Jesus Christ paying for all our sins in the second verse, but that also could be interpreted differently by the listener. And that's exactly the way we wanted it, for the opening track: leave stuff open to the imagination of the listener.
